Appreciative Enquiry
The two-day course will work to attend to five dimensions of Appreciative Inquiry:
- An understanding of Appreciative Inquiry, its background, how it evolved, its key principles and structure.
- The skills, methods and process involved in Appreciative Inquiry.
- The experience of Appreciative Inquiry, this involves experiencing and engaging in it, examples from different settings and an exploration of where people might have been part of ‘appreciative’ processes even if the term Appreciative Inquiry was not used.
- An exploration of what an ‘appreciative’ facilitation style looks and feels like, and
- Design work – the workshop will design a number of Appreciative Inquiry processes which are of direct interest and relevance to participants.
The primary focus of the workshop is ‘developing an appreciative practice’ rather than a more academic learning about Appreciative Inquiry. While there will be a weaving together of the five dimensions mentioned, the general movement of the two days will be from experience to understanding to skills to style to design.
The facilitator will bring lots of resources and will also point participants towards the literature and web sites for those who may want to do more reading and research. It is an area that is quite well documented and it is easy to pick up ideas for practice from others.

Creative
Facilitation Skills
Overview
On the course four areas are attended to: theory, skills, practice/experience
and the self. Each of these elements and the interplay between them is essential
for good facilitation. The aim of the course is to enable participants to
be better resourced (familiarity with and competence in a range of methods)
and more resourceful (an enhanced ability to creatively respond to the demands
and challenges of the moment).
Target participants
This practical course is intended for people in the community and voluntary
sector who are working as facilitators or are involved in roles where facilitation
and facilitative skills are important.
Learning content
The content of the course is negotiated with the participants so that it is
relevant and pertinent to their needs. It is also informed by the experience
of the course facilitators. Among the themes and issues chosen by previous
groups are: supporting/nourishing the self, decision making, facilitator
styles, creative processes, power issues, managing conflict, designing participatory
meetings, understanding key elements in group dynamics and development.
Process
The trainers like to facilitate a high level of participation, recognizing
that participants will have a variety of different experiences. There is
also an awareness of the diversity and personal learning styles within the
group. A wide range of methods and resources will be drawn upon. There will
be an emphasis on participants exploring and sharing their own experience
and working on real-life cases and scenarios.

Creative Facilitation Skills For whom is the course intended?
The course is intended for people in the Community and Voluntary Sector who are working as facilitators or are involved in roles where facilitation and facilitative skills are important. This course will take place in Dun Laoghaire, the exact venue to be decided at a later date.
Overall Framework
The focus is on creative facilitation, encouraging participants to reflect on their current practice while attending to the areas of skills, theory, experience and the self. Each of these elements and the interplay between them is essential for good facilitation.
In our experience in order to work confidently and competently, a facilitator needs:
- A clear understanding and strong theoretical grasp of what they are about
- An ability to articulate what they are doing and why they are doing it
- A commitment to the values underlying facilitation and participatory practice
- A familiarity with and competence in a wide range of processes and techniques
- A willingness to review experience and reflect on practice.
The aim of this training is to enable participants to be better resourced (familiarity with and competence in a range of methods) and more resourceful (an enhanced ability to creatively respond to the demands and challenges of the moment).
Content
The content of the training course is negotiated with the participants so that it is relevant and pertinent to their needs. It is also informed by the experience of the course facilitators. Among the themes and issues chosen by previous groups are:
designing participatory meetings,
- understanding key elements in group dynamics and development,
- facilitating participatory decision-making,
- facilitator styles,
- creative processes,
- power issues,
- managing conflict,
- supporting/nourishing the self.
Process
In terms of process we are mindful of three things. We like to facilitate a high level of participation, we recognise that participants will have a variety of different experiences and we are also aware that there will be a diversity of personal learning styles within the group. So we tend to draw from a wide range of methods and resources. There is an emphasis on participants drawing on and sharing their own experience and working on real-life cases and scenarios.

Supporting Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Communities Code
of Practice
International estimates are that lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people
account for 6–10% of the population.
As such, between a quarter and half a million
people in Ireland are LGBT. A study of over
1,100 LGBT people in Ireland found that LGBT
people still face considerable levels of stigmatisation,
discrimination and harassment in their daily
lives (Mayock et al 2009). Supporting the equality
and inclusion of groups experiencing discrimination,
disadvantage and exclusion is central to community
development work.
This one-day Code of Practice workshop
will provide participating individuals
and groups with a structure within which
they can frame their support for LGBT
people. This Code of Practice will help
foster an environment which promotes
awareness and understanding of the needs
of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered
people.

Training
Manual in Quality Standards
Overview
The aim of the manual is to provide a clear
framework for practitioners of substance use
education, such as workers in drug education
and community education or development, youth
workers, and health promotion staff, and for
individuals and agencies commissioning substance
use education. Action 26 of the National Drugs
Strategy 2009-2016 outlines the need to “implement
a uniform set of drugs & alcohol education
standards using the DEWF framework.”
The manual is based on a substantial review of international
research and best practice and provides guidelines for
the development and enhancement of substance use education
in school, youth-work, and community-based settings.
It should be noted that it is not aimed at primary or
post-primary teachers, who already have guidelines and
resources in the Walk Tall and SPHE programmes.
The manual also includes a 'core skills and competencies' audit
for practitioners at three levels:
- foundation level, including core knowledge, attitudes
and skills;
- generalist competences, including
substance use education and prevention work, targeted
education,
advice giving,
programme delivery
etc.;
- specialist competencies.
Individuals who take part in the training will each
receive a manual to take away which can be used with
target groups in the community.
The Quality Standards training day is one part of a
two-day training in Substance Use Prevention & Education.
The first day (Parachute Programme) is detailed above.
Individuals do not have to attend both days to train in either
programme.

Quality Standards in Substance Use Education
The Manual was developed by the Drug Education Workers Forum as a way of standardising substance use education within the community, voluntary and statutory sector. Standards within substance use education may include educational programmes, policies and guidelines. The Manual includes 4 key settings where practitioners can influence drug prevention & education, including (1) School (2) Youth Work (3) Community (4) All Setting Section. Also included is a section on ‘Competencies’, whereby practitioners and employers can benefit, the former by assisting professional development through particular skills and areas of knowledge, and the latter through identifying core competencies within new/existing staff. The Quality Standards Manual has been recognised at a national level through Action 26 of The National Drugs Strategy 2009-2016.
Putting the Pieces Together: A Drug & Alcohol Resource for Trainers
This Manual was developed by the Western Regional Drugs Task Force as a resource for practitioners involved in the delivery of drugs and alcohol education. The aim of the Manual is to provide a practical approach to working with young people (in an out of school setting), parents and communities affected by drug use. The objectives are to increase knowledge and understanding, challenge attitudes, develop skills in delivering substance use education, and give an introduction into the use of brief interventions. This trainers resource was endorsed in 2008 by the then Minister for the National Drugs Strategy 2001-2008 John Curran.
